A Discussion on Ethics of AI in Creative Writing with The Reading Geese Book Club at POETS on June 7th, 2024
On June 7, 2024, I’ll be leading a discussion with The Reading Geese Book Club at the Waterloo Engineering Society. Yes, they’ve invited me back. Whoop!
This time, we will be discussing the topic, The Ethics of AI in Creative Writing.
I finally found the time this year to explore and experiment with Artificial Intelligence apps such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Yes, I’m sadly behind, but I’m delighted to share with The Reading Geese Book Club my thoughts about how to use AI in practical, ethical ways that will enrich a storyteller’s writing process without losing their human expression.
As a writer on a shoestring budget and a lack of time to work on The Great Novel , I’ve been experimenting this year with the free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude*, for ideation generation, troubleshooting issues, naming characters, developing story titles, to name a few. I hope to touch on the topics of story development, outlining, focused research, the imperfections of AI, as well as the potential drawbacks for creative writers. (*Don’t ask me how, but for a few weeks my VPN had me located in Minnesota and I was able to log into Claude and explore.)
If you are uncertain or just simply unsettled by Artificial Intelligence when it comes to the Creative Arts, feel free to drop by on Friday, June 7th, 2024, from 6-7 pm, at POETS on Ring Road, located in the Carl A. Pollock Hall of the Waterloo Engineering Society. Non-members are welcome and there is no cost to attend. Hopefully by the time the discussion has ended, you will have figured out how to use AI ethically in your writing process.
For those of you who are trying to figure out how to get your hands on my print books since my attendance at conventions has been limited these past couple of years, I will have my titles available for sale in small quantities. Also, for anyone in the bookclub who can’t make it, the event will be livestreamed on The Reading Geese Book Channel on Discord. AND we will be miking the event this time so the audio will be audible and we can post it on social media. 🙂
Looking forward to seeing you there!
